Southwick, Massachusetts Real Estate Market Report

Southwick is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts with a population of 9,706 people at the 2009 census.

Originally a huge farming community, most notably in the tobacco industry, Southwick has gradually become a suburban residential town with many of the old farmlands being developed for housing.

Much of Southwick, MA inhabits what is known as “the jog” or “notch” in the Western border between Massachusetts and Connecticut. This border moved several times until Massachusetts claimed the area (known as the “jog”). A border dispute continued until 1804, when the current boundary was established through a compromise between Connecticut and Massachusetts. As a result of this border resolution, Southwick is the southernmost town in western Massachusetts. (from Wikipedia).

There are many of us who play the “I remember Southwick when” game: I remember when The Summer House was Friendly’s, Jones Market, the original Roma Pizza, the miniature golf course where Big Y and Ocean State are now, no streetlights….what do you remember?

Southwick, MA has always been an attractive suburb of Springfield, MA and even Hartford, CT. The Congamond Lakes provide a wonderful recreational area and there are lots of terrific communities with all types of homes.
