You Know You’re From Southwick If…

congamond sunset
My new favorite Facebook group is “You know you’re from Southwick if…”.

Created by Sharon Killips Alexander last week, the group has blossomed in a speedy fashion and has been entertaining thousands of us who were raised in the town of Southwick, MA.

Here is a small selection of the posts:

“Kimberly Kulik Hutton
if you had to wake up at 4:00AM on Sat. and Sun. to go to work at Mrs Murphy’s Donut Shop”

“Karen Topor
If you walked around the neighborhood and had a special call to all your friends to see if they were out. You knew they could come out and meet up if they called back to you.”

“Sharon Killips Alexander
Just a thought – So grateful that I grew up without advance video games, cell phones and the technology of today. We formed friendships that have lasted almost lifetimes, you used your imagination, got your filthy playing OUTSIDE…I think growing up the way I did formed a more well rounded person.”

“Thomas J Inserra
you know your from southwick if you remember getting chicken at…Jones grocery….”

“Thomas J Inserra
you know your from southwick if you remember getting chicken at…Jones grocery….”

“Peter Coppa
you know your from southwick if you live away and you say your first job was working on tobacco and you get a puzzled look!!! Shade tobacco????? Barns!!!!”

These are just a small sampling of the amusing posts on this group page. If you are from Southwick, MA, as I am, and want to share in the fun, be sure to visit the You know you’re from Southwick if…Facebook page!

Paddy’s Irish Pub- Downtown Westfield

Morriss and I just visited Paddy’s Irish Pub on Elm Street in Westfield, MA for a casual dinner. Open for about a month, I had been wanting to stop in (not just because of my love for all things Irish).

We were both impressed with the upscale pub decor: lots of wood paneling, richly painted tin ceiling, nice lighting and good seating.

Our waitress, Shannon, greeted us quickly and after we perused the good sized draft beer samplings we ordered and were served quickly. The food is what I would describe as “upscale pub fare”. The servings were ample and the quality of the food was all good. We ordered a tomato soup, Caesar salad and quesadilla but we especially enjoyed the pesto pizza with caramelized onions, chicken and balsamic drizzle.

I am looking forward to making this a regular stop and thought that the setting was easily one of the nicest in town.

This is much more than a bar (although the bar is a nice looking one) and I recommend you give it a shot the next time you are looking for a nice casual dinner. Remember, if we want a vibrant and exciting downtown Westfield, it is up to us to make it that way!

I am adding this to my other favorite downtown destinations (besides Park Square Realty, obviously): Mama Cakes, Nails R Us, Ezra’s Mercantile and Leo’s Gallery Deli.

Romance, Excitement and Surprise in Western MA Real Estate

Sold!
Every closing is exciting and special, but yesterday I participated in one of the most romantic, exciting and fun closings in my 23 year real estate career.

My clients, Dan and Ania, had seen a home for sale in Westfield, MA that they offered on, but we couldn’t not come to agreeable terms. After a few days, I heard from Dan who said that he wanted to buy the home, but we had to get it closed in a week because he wanted to surprise his wife on their anniversary which was February 1.

It took a lot of hustling on our part, but we were able to get the home closed in time and then Dan started planning the reveal of the surprise.

Ania had noticed that the property had gone under agreement on the computer and had been commenting about it. In order to get her to the house for the reveal, Dan told her that there was an issue with the deal in place and we had to hurry up and meet to put an offer in. Meanwhile, he spent the day (Ania was at work) moving furniture and personal items so that they could spend that night in their new home.

We arrived early and Dan put up “Happy Anniversary” decorations while his mother, brother and I got our cameras ready to capture the reaction…I will let my video tell you about that part of this story:

A sweet addition to this story is that this home was the home of Albert Ferst, who is well known and loved in Westfield for his philanthropy and sweetness to his wife Amelia. It is a wonderful thing to see another family carry the romantic torch into the next generation of this home’s story.

It was a rare thrill to be part of this sweet home purchase and I wish Dan, Ania and their family many years of happiness in their new home. I am so glad that they let me help them make this dream happen and look forward to seeing them settle into their new home!

The Highest and Lowest Home Sales in Southwick, MA for 2011

Lowest and Highest home sales in Southwick, MA for the year 2011.

As we move into a new year I enjoy taking a look at what happened in the towns of Western MA where I work as a REALTOR.  I especially like finding out what the highest and lowest home sales were in those towns.  I guess I am a woman of extremes!

Today I was taking a peek at my hometown, Southwick, MA 01077.

Here is a glimpse of the lowest home sale in Southwick…a bank owned cottage in the Congamond Lake area needing what appears to be total rehabilitation:

At the other end of the spectrum we have a huge custom Colonial on the grounds of The Ranch Golf course:
