One of my favorite things about living in the Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut area is that some of the best summer evenings are completely free. Throw a lawn chair in the trunk, call a friend, and you can find live music somewhere almost every night of the week.
From Downtown Live in Westfield to Stanley Park, Southwick’s Whalley Park, and Simsbury Meadows in Connecticut, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside, enjoy the season, and experience the communities that make this corner of New England such a wonderful place to call home.
Instead of making you hunt through a dozen different websites, I pulled together this guide to some of the most popular summer concert series in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. Whether you’re looking for classic rock, tribute bands, community concerts, or simply a relaxing night outdoors, you’ll find plenty of options here.
Grab your lawn chair, maybe a few snacks, and let’s see what’s playing this summer.
Where to Find Free Summer Concerts in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut
Westfield, Massachusetts
Downtown Live!
Downtown Live! has become one of Westfield’s signature summer traditions. Held on Friday evenings at Elm Street Plaza, the series brings live music, outdoor dining, local vendors, and a lively downtown atmosphere to the center of the city.
One of my favorite parts is simply seeing the community come together. Friends run into friends, families gather downtown, and for a few hours everyone slows down and enjoys a summer evening.

Simsbury Meadows Community Concerts
Simsbury has long been one of my favorite towns in Northwestern Connecticut. I spent more than three decades teaching dance there and two decades working with Simsbury Summer Theatre, so I’ve had the opportunity to watch generations of families grow up in this wonderful community.
Today, Simsbury Meadows continues that tradition of bringing people together through the arts. With its beautiful setting and outstanding lineup of performances, it has become one of the region’s premier outdoor music venues.
Simsbury Meadows hosts a variety of community performances and outdoor music events throughout the summer. Some are free, some require admission.

Talcott Mountain Music Festival
While not free, this annual Hartford Symphony tradition deserves an honorable mention. Held on summer evenings at Simsbury Meadows, it has become one of Connecticut’s most beloved outdoor music events.
Information:
Before You Go
Most outdoor concerts encourage visitors to bring:
- A lawn chair or blanket
- Bug spray
- Water
- A light jacket for cooler evenings
- Cash or a credit card for food vendors
Because outdoor events are weather-dependent, it’s always a good idea to check the event website before heading out.
Did I Miss One?
One of the things I love most about living in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut is how many local traditions are tucked away in our towns and neighborhoods. If your community hosts a summer concert series that should be included here, send me a message and I’ll happily add it to the guide.
Happy listening, and enjoy the music.
