One of the best things about living in Western Massachusetts is how much there is to do without ever having to get on a plane.

Within an hour of Westfield, you can spend the morning hiking to a scenic overlook, the afternoon picking berries at a local farm, and the evening listening to live music under the stars. You can explore charming downtowns, visit vineyards and breweries, cool off by the water, discover hidden waterfalls, or enjoy a picnic in one of the region’s beautiful parks.

And if you’re willing to cross the Massachusetts-Connecticut border, the possibilities expand even further.

From Stanley Park in Westfield to Enders Falls in Granby, from Congamond Lakes to Talcott Mountain, from community concerts to local wineries, this corner of New England offers far more than many people realize.

I’ve created this guide to bring together some of my favorite summer resources, local attractions, and seasonal activities throughout Western Massachusetts and Northwestern Connecticut. I’ll continue updating it throughout the season, so be sure to bookmark it and check back often.

Free Summer Concerts

Summer and outdoor music go hand in hand.

Whether you’re attending Downtown Live in Westfield, a concert at Stanley Park, a performance at Simsbury Meadows, or one of the many community music series throughout the region, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy live music outdoors.

Fireworks Displays

From small-town celebrations to larger regional displays, summer fireworks remain one of New England’s favorite traditions.

Farmers Markets

Fresh produce, local flowers, baked goods, honey, artisan products, and community connections can all be found at local farmers’ markets.

From Westfield and Southwick to Granby and Northampton to Simsbury, farmers’ markets are one of the best ways to support local growers and small businesses.

There is something timeless about spending a summer morning picking your own fruit.
