A Southwick Tradition I Suddenly Noticed

American flags line the center of Southwick, Massachusetts, during Memorial Day season.

Southwick, Massachusetts, is my hometown, and on Sunday evening, I found myself noticing one of its most recognizable Memorial Day traditions in a whole new way.

Every year around Memorial Day, the center of Southwick, Massachusetts, is transformed by hundreds of American flags. From Tannery Road to the end of the New Cemetery, flag after flag lines the road, creating a scene that’s hard to miss.

For whatever reason,

I really noticed them this year.

Not just the flags themselves, but what they say about Southwick.

As I drove through my hometown, I found myself thinking about the things that become part of the landscape. The traditions. The familiar sights. We pass the little details every day without giving them much thought. Sometimes it takes a moment to see them again.

The flags caught my attention, but what stayed with me was the feeling behind them. They reminded me that community isn’t always found in the big moments. Sometimes it’s found in the traditions that quietly return year after year, becoming part of the rhythm of a town and the lives of the people who call it home.

Southwick has changed over the years, as every town does. New homes have been built. Businesses have come and gone. Life has moved forward. Yet there are still moments that make the town feel unmistakably like Southwick.

On Sunday evening, from Tannery Road to the end of the New Cemetery, hundreds of American flags lined the road and reminded me of that. They weren’t just lining the roadway. They were reminding me why Southwick will always be part of who I am. Thanks for taking a little drive through Southwick with me.

What are some of the Southwick traditions, landmarks, or local memories that stand out to you?

If you’re curious about life in Southwick, I also put together a community guide for people considering a move to town.
